At least 31 prisoners were killed during fighting between inmatesin prisons in the city of Altamira Tamolipas state in the Gulf of Mexico, reported international news agency Reuters.
The battles between rival gangs of prisoners, who are often involved with drug cartels attempting to controlling the Mexican border - the U.S., began at noon Wednesday after several hours of clashes with knives and makeshift weapons, the guards failed to intervene and to stop the bloodshed.
Prison spokesman said the number of casualties had reached 13.
